Telling a clear story

If drawing just consisted of learning how to describe form and light and shadow and the technical aspects, there would be no point in learning to draw because the skills developed would be no use to anyone. The main purpose of a drawing is to tell a clear story. The old masters and illustrators were very good at telling clear stories through their drawings. This very much links to drawing for animation for obvious reasons.

This is an illustration by Rembrandt, although the drawing is not refined the story is clear.
This is a character development sketch from Tarzan and although it is just one drawing and not a moving image the story is still clear.
